Atletico Madrid has qualified for the Europa League final, and Arsenal’s hopes of winning the cup to secure a Champions League spot next season has ended. After a 1-1 draw in the first half at the Emirates a week ago, it was a Diego Costa late goal during the first half that made the Spanish football team go through with a 1-0 victory. Atletico will take on Marseille in the final after the French club scored an extra-time goal at Red Bull Salzburg to go through 3-2 on aggregate.
This was obviously a very pained moment for Wenger as he will leave the Emirates without having lifted any European trophy during his epic reign. And with the knowledge that Arsenal lost here because of some of the shortcomings he had failed to address.
They played well between both matches but were constantly out runned by Atletico’s , and couldn’t protect their own steadily. The goal they gave up was as soft as the one they conceded in the first half, and their finishing was worse: they got in promising positions but barely got off a shot. Arsenal were not good enough, then. But Atletico deserve to be in the final.
